  • Clearing Your Heart For New Creation: Vol. 5 "The Dialogues"

Volume 5 from "The Dialogues" Click here to view all volumes I have spent over 20 years as an artist and over 10 years as a psychotherapist. Whether preparing a canvas for my next painting, navigating challenging life circumstances, or guiding clients through turbulent times; I whole-heartedly believe the truth of the following Divine message I received in my meditation in 2005: Meditation: The Voice: Cindy, all creation comes from within. This is why it is so important for people to understand the importance of clearing their hearts and minds for new creation. I believe the practice of meditation is an excellent process for this. I utilize this practice in my life and I train others in this modality. It is a spiritual practice, an art form, and a therapeutic tool. Sometimes meditation is enough to clear the way for new creation, and sometimes there is deeper work to be done. Life experiences can leave emotional wounds. In this case, a deeper healing process is necessary before one is ready to create something new. Heart Vision can show you the way! Heart Vision is a Spiritual and Creative Transformation Program. It is a four step process: 1) Clearing Your Heart Space, 2) Healing Our Hearts Through Nurturance, 3) Creating a New Vision, and 4) Aligning With Your Soul's Request. Reflections: Do you feel stuck? Are ready to move your life in a new direction? Do you want to move beyond the obstacles that hold you back from creating what you desire? Open yourself up to greater possibilities... • Transforming Prejudice & Hate Into Love: Vol.4 "The Dialogues"

Volume 4 of "The Dialogues" Click here to view previous volumes We are in a pivotal time in history. We are seeing the issue of prejudice and division making top headlines. Various hate groups are on display as we watched The White House under siege. My heart hurts for this country. You could say that I am a ‘highly sensitive person.’ I have high levels of empathy and compassion for others, and I feel things on a very deep level. It is one of the reasons I became a Clinical Social Worker. As I wrestle with these recent events, I asked God to show me what messages from ‘The Dialogues,’ could give clarity on these issues. I was led to the following journal entry: My Meditation The Voice: Prejudice is pride and injustice – channeled through self hate, and vile self arrogance. Break the chain. Let’s address the issue of gossip. Do not speak of others in a harsh judgmental way. Only love, compassion, and self reflection. The origin of our thoughts is what disturbs the pattern of a loving space. Undo the self loathing, and all else will fall away. People judge others as a reflection of their own inadequacies. Hate has to be personally experienced, for it to reflect and project onto others. Always start with self examination. Cindy: So we have to examine this, if consciousness will elevate? The Voice: People are all a universe within themselves. ‘This cosmos’ is the learning ground of the heart and soul. It is not “out there.” This is a common mistake - to see the world as separate from self. It is not. Cindy, tell people to look inward at their internal terrain – the landscape inside. What do they see? Have them do this exercise: Reflect… See… Draw it… Explain it. Eradicate the hate in your hearts. Siphon it up and release it. Release the hate of all the injustices you perceive to be true for you. This is useful information that needs to be excavated and examined. Cindy: Why do some people need to experience violence and darkness? Or do they? Why is there so much violence and hate? The Voice: Judgment is the root of all violence – all division – separation. This is why love is not more prevalent. Question yourself…Was this true? Is this right? Am I right? Is this the only way to see things? Place yourself in the other persons’ shoes. Compassion is the key to combat the misunderstanding between the genders – the races – the young vs. the old. Seek understanding from others’ perspective. Empathy is a path to empowerment for all. Judging yourself as worthy, breaks down the walls of hatred. Serve with an open heart – live humbly – speak softly – laugh loudly – think intuitively. Seek the expression that is in harmony with the Divine Sacred Spirit – unifying us all. Rise above the ordinary to embrace the extraordinary. Bring in love; push away hate. Love the beauty of your soul. Your internal state of affairs will reflect in the world beyond – spreading the same. Change the world in this way. Cindy ponder these things. It will magnify consciousness. Reflections I have reflected on this teaching and I hope you will too. Change starts with each of us. Our thoughts, our beliefs, our actions have power far beyond what we can imagine. Raising our awareness of our hidden prejudices, self judgement, negative thinking is where we begin. Healing our hearts from emotional wounds, correcting our thinking, and loving ourselves, can raise us to a higher level of consciousness. From this place we will radiate love into the world. • Why Functional Medicine goes beyond Conventional Medicine

Now, more than ever, people are seeking to find ways to live healthier and longer with a better quality of life. In addition, with so many "untreatable diagnosis" given by conventional medicine, people are searching for ways to take control of their wellness and find relief from the symptoms that primary care providers often attempt to bandaid with prescriptions. Here's where functional medicine comes in... The functional medicine approach is based on finding the root of the problem, rather than simply treating symptoms. Functional medicine promotes the practice of considering lifestyle, genetics and environment when diagnosing and recommending treatment. What is functional medicine? Functional medicine takes a patient-centered approach to screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Instead of looking at the patient as an illness or cluster of symptoms, Dr. Taylor considers your lifestyle, genetics, and environment when diagnosing and recommending treatments. This empowers you to take an active role in your own health. What are the core principles of functional medicine? As a functional medicine practitioner, Dr. Taylor recognizes that each patient is a unique human being whose biochemistry is influenced by genetics and their particular environment. She’s committed to patient-centered treatment and seeks to balance your mind, body, and spirit as a way to ultimate health. Dr. Taylor recognizes that all of your body systems are connected and a symptom in one may be caused by a disturbance in another. Functional medicine views good health as more than the absence of disease, but as the enhancement of vitality. Her practice aims to extend the quality, not just the length of your life. Dr. Taylor will always be respectful of your needs, values, and preferences. How does functional medicine differ from conventional medicine? In functional medicine, the emphasis is on nourishing the basic foundational aspects of your health. These include quality of sleep, nutrition, stress management, relationships, genetics, and exercise. When any of these are out of balance, it has a dire impact on your health. Hormone irregularities, nutritional deficiencies, an abundance of stress, and aging can all disturb this “foundation” and affect your health. Conventional medicine looks at the symptoms, often without regard to what may be causing them. While you may get resolution to acute problems with medication and other care, the underlying problems causing your symptoms may go undetected. • Rising Above Fear To A New Understanding: Vol 3 from "The Dialogues"

VOLUME 3 from "The Dialogues" Click here to see previous volumes It was a beautiful Spring morning in 2005. The house was quiet. I made it a habit to wake up before the family arouse, so I could get my morning “quiet time.” I grabbed a glass of water and headed to my studio that was located at the back of the house. My art studio was my creative space and had become my sacred, spiritual place. My meditation chair sat over-looking the gardens and pool of my backyard below. I nestled myself into the warm embrace of its colorful fabric, and centered myself for meditation. A yellow legal pad and pen sat on my lap. I closed my eyes, began breathing slowly and deeply; praying for guidance. My Meditation The Voice: Can you see? Write what you know. I pick up my pen and record what I am being shown. I see colors. Then I see images of different angels. I am traveling in a tunnel - black with violet on the bottom. I can’t see where I am going. I have a sense of being blinded. I am going fast, but it is not a sense of ‘true movement’ - fast and stillness at same time. I see violet and white light before me now. There is a pinhole of light ahead; then light everywhere! I am in an atmosphere full of light - Full Light. I am there for awhile. There is no message; just experiences. I am going through what seems to be another tunnel. I am in a different atmosphere, seeing different energy. The Voice: Different veils Cindy - many veils. Cindy: Is this true? Are there many veils? Different layers? The Voice: Yes Cindy, this is so. Cindy: So what does this mean? The Voice: There are many layers to consciousness. Different veils to divide them. Cindy: But I thought there was no division? The Voice: This is true, in essence. All soul energy connects, but there are different levels of understanding - learning; just like on Earth. The veils are thinning; exposing themselves to each other, to create awareness. Souls move at different rates. Different schools of learning. Cindy: Are there colors associated with different levels? What is the violet color you keep showing me? The Voice: The highest order - next to God. Cindy: What’s to learn there? The Voice: Love - unconditional love - grandest level - all encompassing - no judgment. God does not judge, but loves. Cindy: Where did this concept go wrong? The Voice: Fear. Fear is from evil sources and not to be trusted. Fear - lack - are lowest levels of consciousness. All erecting slow, dense energy. Lightness is truth. Joy… like floating balloons - highest high; no limits. How to judge and determine where the level of consciousness is, is to see the energy around the source. Fear, hopelessness, limitation, anger - all signs of lower denser energy. Higher levels are lighter. Gaiety, laughter, adventurous freedom of Spirit - rising above - reaching new heights. Be aware that all can raise their levels of consciousness and energy by choice. Those that have these qualities, will raise others, without even trying. Their vibrations are magnets at a soul level. There are different levels of understanding, but no judgment attached to them – just understanding. To be shared with all! People are on different lesson plans. They can benefit and learn from others. On Earth - judgment creates a division. Knowledge to be learned, but without judgment, jealousy, and control. This is The Goal. Reflections: What are you afraid of? How is fear showing up in your life? What negative beliefs are attached to your fears? Identifying and examining your negative beliefs, is the beginning process of setting yourself free from fear. Often, we operate from these hidden toxic ideologies, and we are not even aware of it. Taking control of our negative thoughts, formulating positive beliefs, and opening ourselves up to higher levels of understanding, lead us to a more peaceful and loving existence. • A Divine Commission To Unify

Volume 2 from "The Dialogues" Click here to view all volumes Two months had past, before the spiritual messages started again. Looking back on it, I think it was an act of mercy! I was so shaken by the experience, I was feeling disoriented, confused, and scared. But after the short reprieve of silence, ‘The Voice’ returned. It was relentless - appearing as an audible phrase in my head. The words in my head repeated until I recorded them on paper. The more I recorded, the more the messages came. My meditation time became a conduit for these messages. I wish I could say that I received these messages gracefully. But the truth is, I was freaking out! It has always been my heart to serve God, but this was more than I was ready for. I spent a lot of time questioning myself, my sanity, and the experiences I was having. I had never experienced anything like this, and did not know why this was happening to me. However, the Divine Voice consistently reassured me that I would be okay, encouraged me to trust the experiences, and to keep recording the messages. I obediently followed the instruction. Over time, I learned to trust what was happening, and I released the need to understand everything. I developed a deep knowing that this was real; even if it is was more than my mind could comprehend. I was now six months into recording the messages. I was in my morning meditation ritual: relaxing my body, slowing my breath, entering into my visual garden; as my consciousness gave way to a dimension beyond this world... My Meditation: I am in ‘the garden’ and it is a beautiful day, as always. I am feeling calmer today. I have a sense of ‘knowing’ that what I am experiencing is real. It has been so confusing, but there are so many signs of confirmation. I hear... The Voice: Cindy, no need to fear any longer. Cindy: You are wanting me to tell the world the messages because I just simply want to serve God, right? I have no ulterior motive, right? The Voice: That is correct, Cindy. Cindy: I am not crazy. Right? The Voice: I have been telling you so. Trust this. You are fine. Nothing bad will come from this. Only good. You have walked through many doors in this process with astonishing faith. That is all that is required. Relax. Let’s cross the veil. It’s time to learn more. Let’s go my child. We cross the veil... The Voice: Love your neighbor. Cindy: What are we doing wrong? The Voice: People are so divided. They do not know how to love themselves, each other, or God. Their hearts need cleansing. They need to peel away selfishness, envy, hate, resentment, self righteousness, ungratefulness, unworthiness. It all comes down to self love. Do they not understand when they treat themselves badly; their bodies, their mind, their thoughts, their intentions - they poison the “God part” of themselves? God resides within everyone. Would they treat their Maker with such disrespect and disgust? No! They do not realize what they do. Then they spread the poison to others; into the Earth. This is not good. Remind them of who they are – children of God – God beings. Sacred beings. Remind them of their goodness, their purity, their place of righteous honor. It starts with self. Treat yourselves as holy. The church says to worship God. Well God resides within all people – so worship yourselves and your neighbors. This will align us all to the Divine Source of Ultimate Love. Let the love among you ring – let it flow! Align yourselves with the Divine – treat yourselves and others like kings and queens – you are royalty. Love those who hate themselves. Transform their hate into love. It is the best way to combat the destruction they have inside. Love is stronger than hate. No competition! It is the greatest force on the planet. It will remove and cleanse – heal and renew. Bind hearts in love. There is no one better than the other. No one greater than your sister and brother. We are all the same. No power over each other. There is only one true power – God. Start relating on a HEART LEVEL to one another – seeing each other with the heart – not judgment, ego, and self righteousness. A homeless man on the street may have more wisdom about life than a CEO executive. He will know compassion and suffering. Do not judge. We all are learning and we all have value. We contribute to each other. Remove Ego – open your heart. This message is for ALL. Each person needs to examine this now. Cindy: Why now? What is to come? The Voice: The time is coming when people will need to unify. Lock together; connect. To know God’s power. The planet will need to change – Be the voice. It is set in motion. Do your part. Cindy: When do I come out with this? The Voice: It will be shown. It is not time yet. It is just beginning. Prepare though. Follow the directions given. You will be given what you need when time is right. Record this journey. Know this is happening for the good of all. Trust. Tell your story Cindy. Courage required. There will be a time that’s right - Not to know now. Follow the signs – look and see – listen and hear – that is what you need to know for now. “The Dialogues” started sixteen years ago. I share them with you now, because I have been shown that IT IS TIME. My FAITH has taught me to wait on God’s timing. My HOPE is that through them, you will feel inspired, and experience the Heart of God. My LOVE is sent to you though these writings. ABOUT CINDY LEE Hello! • Coming Face To Face With The Divine: Vol. 1 from 'The Dialogues'

Volume 1 from "The Dialogues" Click here to view all volumes The turn of the new decade has turned our world upside down! A world pandemic, a tumultuous presidential election, a storm on the United States Capitol, and the impeachment of the President has created rising political and racial tensions around the nation. It has created a storm of division among people. "The Dialogues" were born at a time in my life when My World was turned upside down. I was scared, life ahead was uncertain, and I did not know what to do next. I turned to the only thing I knew to be true… God would help me through it. It all started on a hot Saturday morning in August. I awoke from a deep dream state. I wiped sleep from my eyes, as I gazed at delicate patterns on the wall, created by the sun streaming through the lace curtains. I was trying to make sense of the unsettling images, dialogue, and scenes that flashed before me in my unconscious state. This was one of many strange experiences that I had encountered over past months. Vivid dreams, feeling vibrational energy running through my veins, hearing random phrases in my mind. None of it made sense. The house was quiet. My husband was in Colorado on vacation with his family, and my daughters where at sleepovers with their friends. I had no place to be, so I took time to meditate. I propped myself up in bed, snuggled into my bed covers, and settled into rhythmic breathing. As my breathing slowed and my body relaxed, I drew my attention inward. The Meditation that Started it All I kept my journal and pen in hand to jot down any insights. But this time something was different. I felt something changing within me. My pen started recording the voice that was speaking to me… The Voice: It’s okay. You are safe. So many new things are happening to you. Cindy: What is happening to me? The Voice: Knowledge revealed. God is speaking to you. You are working on a very high vibration now. Seek peace and harmony. Speak the truth. Your truth is the truth. You can trust it. You will teach with it. Don’t focus on the little stuff; the little worries, like laundry being done right, etc. Your messages are at a high level. People will challenge them and won’t understand them. Be patient with them. Cindy: Are you really speaking to me? (I had an overwhelming feeling in my gut, and I started to cry). Am I a freak? The Voice: No. Don’t worry about how you are perceived. You have a task. Cindy: What is my task? The Voice: To see so others can see. To hear and tell. Cindy: What is it I am to see, hear and tell? The Voice: People are the same, but they don’t know it. Show them through your art. Show them. They will see it. They will feel it in their hearts. They can hear their own hearts. Cindy: Do I work with just women, or is it for all? The Voice: Start with women, but messages are for all. They don’t know what they do to each other. It hurts my heart to see what they do to each other. They must stop, they must stop. Cindy: Is this real? The Voice: You doubt. That’s your weakness. Speak the truth. Get rid of the lies. Speak the truth. So much is an illusion. Tell your story - leave nothing out. TELL ALL. Undo the lies people told you. They are poison. Spit out the “snake poison” and clear your soul. Then speak. Cindy: I love you. The Voice: I love you too. Cindy: Why is it so hard for people to say they love each other? The Voice: They can’t feel it. They are blocked. Most can’t feel deeply. That’s your gift. Show them. Model it. It is your passion that will show them. Show them by word and sight. They are afraid to love their brothers and sisters - humanity. They see the differences. So do you, but I’m getting you to see beyond that. I am getting you to see beneath the surface, beyond the walls people build. Break down the walls. Show them that love is at the core. Love for everyone. We are all the same! Don’t you see?! They can’t see. They let the little irritancy’s divide them from others. It’s not us and them - It’s WE! Cindy: Am I delusional? The Voice: No. There is your doubt again. Trust. There is more to come. Be ready to receive. Note: I felt immediately lighter - separation - blank. There is no more. This experience shook me and shifted me. I was not the same after this. It is hard to explain, but it changed me on a cellular level. My brain and rational thinking did not know what to do with this experience, but there was a knowing in my heart and soul… I had come face to face with The Divine. ABOUT CINDY LEE Hello! • 50+ Morning Affirmations To Set The Tone For Your Entire Day

Originally posted on mindbodygreen.com Affirmations are a powerful tool that can be used by people of any age (kids included!). When repeated in the morning, affirmations can help get the day started on the right foot and prepare you to take action in pursuit of your goals. Here, we break down how affirmations work, plus over 50 to try in the morning to get positivity flowing right off the bat. What are affirmations? Affirmations involve repeating a self-selected phrase or series of phrases that embody who we would like to become. (For example, I am content.) The idea is that positive thinking creates self-improvement and repeating your affirmations throughout the day can transform our thought patterns and mental attitudes. Together, with honest self-reflection and concrete action steps positive affirmations can be a wonderful part of one's behavioral change regimen. How do they work? Research has shown positive affirmations help people cope with difficult emotions and even suicidal thoughts, Yusim notes. It is worth noting, however, that affirmations need to be paired with action. "[Affirmations] work primarily at the conscious level, whereas many of our conflicts about ourselves and our sense of adequacy are within our subconscious or unconscious mind," Yusim notes. "They work even better when accompanied by some honest internal reflection and some deeper internal work that gets to the subconscious or unconscious level," she says, adding that it's also important to take concrete steps to create the changes you're affirming. And of course, affirmations aren't a cure-all. Be careful not to spiritually bypass your own problems, or the problems of others, by suggesting an affirmation a day can make anyone's problems go away. 50+ Affirmations for You To Start Your Day Affirmations for positivity: I am excited for this day. I am so grateful to be alive. I love myself. I'm going to have a great day. I am open to opportunities. I love being alive. Today and every day I am blessed. I am full of joy. I feel at peace. I am positive. My life is abundant and fulfilling. I am committed to my personal growth. Every day I am better than before. Affirmations for an energy boost: I am well rested. My body is powerful. I am energized. I wake each morning with a smile. I feel so alive. Affirmations for resilience: I am strong. I am capable of overcoming anything. No challenge is too great for me. I am resilient. I always overcome obstacles. Nothing can stand in my way. I can get through hardship. I learn and grow through difficulty. I always pick myself back up. I am powerful. I will press on and go forward. I release what no longer serves me. I am adaptable. Affirmations for productivity: I am focused. I will accomplish all my tasks today. I attract success. I am on my game. I will be productive today. I am brimming with great ideas. My mind is clear. I am organized. I will see today's work through. Affirmations for self confidence: I believe in myself. I am a wonderful person. My confidence and self-esteem are high. I know my worth. I love who I am. The people in my life love and support me. Every day I embody the best version of myself. I am happy and healthy. I am deserving of what I desire, and I will achieve it. I radiate confidence. I make decisions that support my highest good. I am courageous. How to use them. To make those affirmations even more powerful, Yusim suggests bringing as much heart and emotion into them as possible: "Say it out loud, like you really meant it, and put as much emotion and conviction as you can into it." On top of that, try visualizing or feeling whatever you're affirming as you say it—what does it sound like? Look like? Feel like? "These simple practices change the affirmation from a cognitive exercise to one that also incorporates your heart and body," Yusim explains. You can then begin to feel and embody the affirmation, going beyond thought and beginning to shift some of those unconscious, deeply held beliefs. The Bottom Line Saying affirmations is a great way to begin reframing your mental patterns, shifting into positive thinking, and slowly but surely changing your outlook. Choose a few to repeat in the mornings to start every day on a brighter note.

  • Skin Cancer Detection + Prevention

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, affecting one in five Americans in the course of a lifetime. Despite the risk factors, skin cancer remains one of the most preventable diseases with early detection. Each year in the U.S., over 5.4 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are treated in more than 3.3 million people. One of the nation's leading Skin Cancer Experts, Dr. Tripp Parker explains the early warning signs of skin cancer, how often to get check-ups and what you can do at home to be proactive at skin cancer detection. Dr. Tripp Parker recommends these daily, monthly, and annual prevention methods for the life of your skin. STEP 1: Get Routine Skin Exams Regular skin exams help reveal cancers when they are small, allowing for easier treatment. The frequency of screenings is based on your age, skin type, history, and other risk factors. We also recommend patients perform self-exams on a monthly basis to watch for any moles or spots that are changing. Schedule routine skin screenings by a physician Perform regular self-examinations STEP 2: Practice Sun Safety We recommend practicing protective behaviors on a daily basis. This means avoiding excessive sun exposure and wearing protective clothing, such as hats and sunglasses. Liberally apply sunscreen SPF 30 or higher containing zinc, titanium or avobenzone — and don’t forget to wear protective lip balm or lipstick. Retinoid (vitamin A) products such as Retin-A can also help curtail sun damage, with the beneficial effects of thickening skin and reducing fine wrinkles. Avoid excessive sun exposure Wear protective clothing UVA/UVB sunblock SPF 30 or higher STEP 3: Be Aware of High-Risk Factors Your age, skin type, prior skin cancer and damage, family history, and other risk factors may put you at greater risk for developing sun damage and skin cancer. Discuss your unique skin type with your physician, and be mindful of these common risk factors: Excess sun exposure Tanning salon exposure Fair skin Blond or red hair color Blue or green eyes Family history Immune suppression Exposure to radiation or chemicals STEP 4: Understand Early Intervention Options Potential pre-cancers, such as actinic keratoses, may be eliminated before they become skin cancers. Early intervention options are based on the growth’s characteristics and the patient’s age and health. Common treatments include: Cryotherapy (freezing) Topical chemotherapy creams (i.e., Efudex and Carac) Photodynamic therapy (blue light or red light treatments) Chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laser resurfacing Professional skin care Dr. Tripp Parker's practice: Skin Cancer Consultants 8230 Walnut Hill Lane Building 3, Suite 808 Dallas, TX75231 Phone: 214-997-6795

  • Suffering from Autoimmune Conditions? The Wahl's Protocol May be The Answer.

Nutrition plays a vital role in boosting our health. And if you live with multiple sclerosis (MS), you know all too well how critical diet is in managing the symptoms that come with this autoimmune disease. There are many people who live with painful symptoms associated with autoimmune conditions like multiple sclerosis. When Dr. Wahls saw that her treatment plans weren't working, she took matters into her own hands and developed Wahls Protocol. What is the story behind the Wahls Protocol? After being restricted to a tilt/recline wheelchair, former athlete Dr. Terry Wahls realized that her current MS treatment plan was not working. Her disease was rapidly progressing while her quality of life was greatly diminishing. Dr. Wahls knew that she was on the path to becoming bedridden. Immersing herself in research, Dr. Wahls developed a holistic protocol for autoimmune conditions. She relinquished her wheelchair confinement and eliminated medications one year after strictly following her protocol; then she completed an 18-mile bicycle tour. Today Dr. Wahls is thriving due to her continual dietary and lifestyle changes. What Is the Wahls Protocol? The diet is a version of the Paleolithic (Paleo) diet. That's based on the idea that humans should eat more like our ancient ancestors and avoid the foods we started eating in the past several hundred years, like wheat and processed foods. On the Wahls Protocol, you eat lots of: Meat and fish Vegetables, especially green, leafy ones Brightly colored fruit, like berries Fat from animal and plant sources, especially omega-3 fatty acids But you don't eat: Dairy products and eggs Grains (including wheat, rice, and oatmeal) Legumes (beans and lentils) Nightshade vegetables, which include tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes, and peppers Sugar HERE ARE 5 TASTY, WAHLS-FRIENDLY RECIPES Find a Certified Provider Dr. Mel Schottenstein studied directly under Dr. Terry Wahls and is the only physician certified as a Wahls Health Practitioner in Arizona! • Setting Goals for the New Year

Tiffany Hendra, a women’s empowerment coach & TV personality, joined Ron Corning to talk about what you should do to make sure you are in a good place to make these goals. achieving WATCH #SOTHRIVE WITH TIFFANY HENDRA The Golden Rules of Goal Setting Originally posted on mindtools.com Have you thought about what you want to be doing in five years' time? Are you clear about what your main objective at work is at the moment? Do you know what you want to have achieved by the end of today? If you want to succeed, you need to set goals. Without goals you lack focus and direction. Goal setting not only allows you to take control of your life's direction; it also provides you a benchmark for determining whether you are actually succeeding. Think about it: having a million dollars in the bank is only proof of success if one of your goals is to amass riches. If your goal is to practice acts of charity, then keeping the money for yourself is suddenly contrary to how you would define success. To accomplish your goals, however, you need to know how to set them. You can't simply say, "I want" and expect it to happen. Goal setting is a process that starts with careful consideration of what you want to achieve, and ends with a lot of hard work to actually do it. In between, there are some very well-defined steps that transcend the specifics of each goal. Knowing these steps will allow you to formulate goals that you can accomplish. The Five Golden Rules 1. Set Goals That Motivate You When you set goals for yourself, it is important that they motivate you: this means making sure that they are important to you, and that there is value in achieving them. If you have little interest in the outcome, or they are irrelevant given the larger picture, then the chances of you putting in the work to make them happen are slim. Motivation is key to achieving goals. Set goals that relate to the high priorities in your life. Without this type of focus, you can end up with far too many goals, leaving you too little time to devote to each one. Goal achievement requires commitment, so to maximize the likelihood of success, you need to feel a sense of urgency and have an "I must do this" attitude. When you don't have this, you risk putting off what you need to do to make the goal a reality. This in turn leaves you feeling disappointed and frustrated with yourself, both of which are de-motivating. And you can end up in a very destructive "I can't do anything or be successful at anything" frame of mind. 2. Set SMART Goals You have probably heard of SMART goals already, but do you always apply the rule? The simple fact is that for goals to be powerful, they should be designed to be SMART. There are many variations of what SMART stands for, but the essence is this – goals should be: Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Relevant. Time Bound. Specific Goals Your goal must be clear and well defined. Vague or generalized goals are unhelpful because they don't provide sufficient direction. Remember, you need goals to show you the way. Make it as easy as you can to get where you want to go by defining precisely where you want to end up. Measurable Goals Include precise amounts, dates, and so on in your goals so you can measure your degree of success. If your goal is simply defined as "To reduce expenses" how will you know when you have been successful? In one month's time if you have a 1 percent reduction or in two years' time when you have a 10 percent reduction? Without a way to measure your success you miss out on the celebration that comes with knowing you have actually achieved something. Attainable Goals Make sure that it's possible to achieve the goals you set. If you set a goal that you have no hope of achieving, you will only demoralize yourself and erode your confidence. However, resist the urge to set goals that are too easy. Accomplishing a goal that you didn't have to work hard for can be anticlimactic at best, and can also make you fear setting future goals that carry a risk of non-achievement. By setting realistic yet challenging goals, you hit the balance you need. These are the types of goals that require you to "raise the bar" and they bring the greatest personal satisfaction. Set Relevant Goals Goals should be relevant to the direction you want your life and career to take. By keeping goals aligned with this, you'll develop the focus you need to get ahead and do what you want. Set widely scattered and inconsistent goals, and you'll fritter your time – and your life – away. Set Time-Bound Goals Your goals must have a deadline. Again, this means that you know when you can celebrate success. When you are working on a deadline, your sense of urgency increases and achievement will come that much quicker. 3. Set Goals in Writing The physical act of writing down a goal makes it real and tangible. You have no excuse for forgetting about it. As you write, use the word "will" instead of "would like to" or "might." For example, "I will write a book this year," not "I would like to write a book this year." The first goal statement has power and you can "see" yourself reducing expenses, the second lacks passion and gives you an excuse if you get sidetracked. Post your goals in visible places to remind yourself every day of what it is you intend to do. Put them on your walls, desk, computer monitor, bathroom mirror or refrigerator as a constant reminder. 4. Make an Action Plan This step is often missed in the process of goal setting. You get so focused on the outcome that you forget to plan all of the steps that are needed along the way. By writing out the individual steps, and then crossing each one off as you complete it, you'll realize that you are making progress towards your ultimate goal. This is especially important if your goal is big and demanding, or long-term. 5. Stick With It! Remember, goal setting is an ongoing activity, not just a means to an end. Build in reminders to keep yourself on track, and make regular time-slots available to review your goals. Your end destination may remain quite similar over the long term, but the action plan you set for yourself along the way can change significantly. Make sure the relevance, value, and necessity remain high.
