- #SOTHRIVE: Kindness Challenge
Our brains have positive psychological reactions with even simple acts of kindness. Chemicals released during the act of helping someone else help reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, decrease blood pressure, protect our hearts, lessen aches and pains, strengthen our immune system and slow aging. According to My Wellness by Nature's Medical Contributor, Dr. Derrick DeSilva, a simple act of kindness actually has a tremendous impact on your wellness. Did you know that you can boost your own immune system by 40% just by something as buying someone a cup of coffee? And, even better, that person and those that witnessed the act ALSO benefit from an immune boost! It's a WIN-WIN for Everyone! Even a simple smile can have healing powers. For example, when we smile, we produce the hormone oxytocin in the brain and throughout the body. Oxytocin releases nitric oxide in the blood vessels, expanding the vessels and helping lower blood pressure. The health benefits of kindness have even been seen in people who witness kind acts. So not only will a kind act benefit you, but those around you! Not sure where to start? Incorporating kindness into your day is easier than you think. Buy a colleague a cup of coffee, say hello to a stranger, offer to babysit or mow the lawn for a neighbor. Here are five tips to help you purposefully infuse being kind into each day. Recognize your ability to show kindness. Anyone can make a positive impact on someone else’s life. The first step is realizing your ability to be kind. Think about others who have helped you and how it impacted your day. Write this down on a sticky note and put it someplace visible. Remind yourself daily to be thoughtful in trying to find ways to help others. Search for opportunities to impact. Keep your eyes open and be on the lookout for individuals in need. Search for opportunities to make an impact. You’ll be surprised to find opportunities all around. A kind act can be small. A kind act doesn’t have to be big, expensive or time consuming. Try to incorporate a few small acts of kindness during your day. Say hello, hold a door open or bring an extra cup of coffee to a colleague. Write down a few ideas at the start of each week and see how many you can complete. Offer no strings attached. When people help someone else, the recipient may feel something is expected in return. If you bring a neighbor dinner, do this without strings attached. The act of kindness becomes more authentic and genuine with this expectation. If the recipient of your kind act is searching for a way to repay you, suggest they pass it forward to someone else. Take note of how you felt. Capture the way you felt after you offered the act of kindness. Did you walk away feeling less stressed, calmer? How did the person you helped react? Did you notice any changes? Write down what you observed to inspire you to continue to incorporate kindness into your day. Continue to search for opportunities to show kindness, the more you practice the easier it becomes. Little acts of kindness can add up to make a big difference in your happiness and your health. Looking for ways to boost your immune system naturally? Anti-oxidants are like little scavengers that find things that shouldn't be inside of your body and gets rid of it. Go for the Berries At the top of the list for the best sources of anti-oxidants is berries....all kinds of berries! Dr. Mel encourages all of her patients to eat a limitless amount of berries because of their great nutritional benefits. Chase the Rainbow Beyond berries, look for color-rich foods like carrots and veggies. More than ever, people are searching for ways to feel better and live longer. Functional Medicine digs deeper than the symptoms to find the underlying cause. Dr. Mel has traveled all over the world to find better ways to help her patients feel better, live longer and enjoy a better quality of life. More About Antioxidants Antioxidants are compounds that may help delay or even prevent cell damage in the body. When a person integrates a significant amount of antioxidants into their diet, it may help defend the body against oxidative stress from potentially harmful free radicals, which are unstable atoms. When free radicals build up in a person’s blood, they can create oxidative stress which may increase the risk of developing heart disease, cancer, and many other chronic health problems. Here is a list of more antioxidant-rich foods that, if you add these into your diet, can increase your antioxidant levels and potentially help prevent the damage that doctors associate with oxidative stress As we discussed above, berries are at the top of our list for antioxidant foods. Along with berries, some other great choices are: DARK CHOCOLATE Good quality dark chocolate has high levels of nutrients and antioxidants. Researchers have linked dark chocolate to a range of potential health benefits, including: lower risk of heart disease reduced inflammation less chance of high blood pressure promotion of good cholesterol ARTICHOKES Artichokes provide lots of nutrients and antioxidants. Research suggests that they may help lower people’s cholesterol levels and improve their gut health. How you prepare them makes a difference! It's better to steam or boil artichokes to get the most out of their antioxidant qualities because this breaks down the cell walls, making the antioxidants more accessible. PECANS Pecans offer high levels of good fat, calories, minerals, and antioxidants. BONUS: eating raw pecans helps lower the blood levels of LDL cholesterol, which may mean that these nuts help prevent heart disease! RED CABBAGE Red cabbage contains vitamins A, C, and K, several antioxidants and, like strawberries and red kale, contains anthocyanins- a special group of antioxidants that have shown to promote heart health, prevent cancer, and reduce inflammation. According to one study, anthocyanins have the following health benefits: anti-inflammatory anticancer diabetes maintenance and management promote weight control prevent heart disease Want to find a SottoPelle Provider? - The UNEXPECTED IMPACT of an Unhealthy Gut
Everyone is talking about gut health, but why is it so important? Dr. Mel Schottenstein explains the incredible the importance of the gut to our overall health. Numerous studies in the past two decades are revealing a link between gut health and the immune system, mood, mental health, autoimmune diseases, endocrine disorders, skin conditions, and cancer. ☞ FOLLOW DR. MEL FOR MORE! 7 SIGNS OF AN UNHEALTHY GUT An unhealthy gut can manifest many symptoms, here are the most common: 1. Sugar Cravings A Processed food and added sugars can affect the good bacteria living in your system and create an imbalanced microbiome. In turn, the imbalance can increase sugar cravings, which then damages your gut further. Sugars like high-fructose corn syrup and refined sugars have been proven to increase inflammation in the body- which can be the foundation to a number of diseases and even cancer. 2. Chronic Fatigue or Insomnia Serotonin is produced mostly within the gut. This hormone affects your mood and sleep, so gut damage can impair your body's ability to sleep well. An unhealthy gut may contribute to insomnia or poor sleep, and therefore lead to chronic fatigue. Poor sleep for a long period of time has been linked to a greater risk of fibromyalgia. 3. Upset stomach Stomach disturbances like gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and heartburn can all be signs of an unhealthy gut. A balanced gut will have less difficulty processing food and eliminating waste. 4. Unexplained Weight Gain or Weight Loss Your body's ability to absorb nutrients, regulate blood sugar and even how it stores fat can be impacted negatively by an unbalanced gut. Blood sugar regulation affects insulin resistance, which could lead to weight gain. Small bacterial overgrowth could cause unhealthy weight loss. 5. Skin Conditions Eczema and other skin conditions have been linked to inflammation of the gut due to poor diet or food allergens. Inflammation can then increase chances of the gut leaking certain proteins that can irritate the skin and cause chronic skin conditions. 6. Autoimmune conditions More and more studies are finding evidence that the gut greatly impacts the immune system and how effectively it functions. An unhealthy gut may increase systemic inflammation and lead to autoimmune diseases. 7. Food Allergies and Intolerance The difficulty in digesting certain foods are called food intolerances, which may be signs of poor quality of bacteria in the gut. Food allergies may also be linked to an unhealthy gut and trigger symptoms like bloating, has, diarrhea, nausea and more. The takeaways Chronic digestive complaints, like gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea, are all signs of an unhealthy gut, but imbalances in your gut microbiome can also cause more widespread problems like difficulty concentrating, skin troubles, and more. Luckily, there are lots of things you can do to help improve your gut health. While diet is often the first line of defense, taking probiotics and other digestive supplements, reducing stress levels, and exercising regularly can also play a big role in getting your body back to optimal health! - 10 Signs You Have An Unhealthy Gut + How To Support It
When your gut is healthy, the rest of your body hums along happily. That's because your gut influences everything from your digestion to your brain and your immune system. If your gut isn't at its healthiest, you may experience some apparent digestive symptoms, like gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. But there are some less obvious signs, too. Poor concentration, fatigue, and skin problems can also point to gut issues. Luckily, there are ways to tell if you have an unhealthy gut, plus expert-backed strategies to cope. 1. Gas and Bloating Gas is produced as a normal part of the digestion and fermentation process in the gut, however some strains of gut bacteria product more gas than others. If you have more of these super-gas producing "bad" strains, it could lead to excessive fermentation, trapping gas in the gut and creating bloat. 2. Diarrhea Occasional loose stool affects everyone at some point, but chronic or acute diarrhea can be a sign of bacterial overgrowth or an infection with Clostridioides difficile, a type of bacteria that lives in the gut in small numbers, but can create problems when it multiples. Diarrhea can also make gut health worse by pushing out the good bacteria in your gut, contributing to even more gut dysbiosis. 3. Constipation Although researchers haven’t been able to pinpoint a single underlying cause of constipation, one scientific review points out that functional constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) is connected to gut imbalance. People who suffer from constipation typically have lower levels of certain types of bacteria, including Bifidobacteria, in their stool samples. Which is often why supplementing with this type of probiotic strain can help improve digestion.* 4. Mood disorders Your microbiome plays a vital role in your mental health and the way you respond to stress. Although the exact mechanisms aren’t totally clear, there’s evidence that certain hormones that are made in the gut—collectively called gut peptides—control the signaling between your gut and brain (and vice versa). If this hormonal balance is thrown off, it can contribute to anxiety, and other mood disorders. 5. Poor concentration Your gut produces neurotransmitters that are directly connected to mood, thoughts, and other cognitive abilities, like concentration. Research shows that gut dysbiosis can negatively affect learning and memory and contribute to inflammatory reactions in the brain. 6. Skin inflammation and acne Topical skin care products are often recommended for eczema, psoriasis, acne and other inflammatory skin problems, but in many cases, an unhealthy gut is to blame. Your gut is in direct communication with your skin through what’s called the gut-skin axis. It plays a role in skin homeostasis and inflammatory responses that keep your skin clear and healthy. Your skin also has a microbiome of its own, and the bacteria in your gut directly influence the balance of bacteria on your skin. An imbalance in your gut can cause an imbalance in your skin that results in things like acne, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. 7. Sugar cravings The microbes in your gut are really good at trying to manipulate you into eating the types of food that feed them and help them grow. But different types of microbes like different foods. For example, yeast thrives on sugar, Bifidobacteria love dietary fiber, and Bacteroidetes prefer fats. If your gut contains too much yeast it can lead to intense sugar cravings that ultimately perpetuate the unhealthy gut cycle. 8. Chronic fatigue Research shows that people with chronic fatigue syndrome have abnormal levels of certain types of gut bacteria. In fact, the connection between an unhealthy gut and chronic fatigue is so strong that one study estimates that 80 percent of people with chronic fatigue could be diagnosed just by looking at their gut bacteria. An unhealthy gut can also negatively affect your circadian rhythm, which can disrupt sleep and leave you feeling overly tired during the day. 9. Weight gain and obesity There are several factors that contribute to weight gain, but the bacteria in your gut is one that’s often overlooked. One study looked at the gut microbiome in lean and overweight twins and found that the overweight twins had reduced bacterial diversity—or fewer types of bacteria in their gut. Certain types of bacteria can also influence weight gain, since bacteria help break down food and the way your body absorbs nutrients. 10. Autoimmune diseases Your gut microbiome directly influences your immune system. When your gut is healthy, your immune system is healthy. But when things become imbalanced, it can lead to immune abnormalities, like autoimmune diseases. Research has connected an unhealthy gut to several autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and autoimmune liver disease. Another study found that when a certain bacteria, called Enterococcus gallinarum, multiplies too much, it can travel outside your gut to your liver and other tissues where it contributes to the development of autoimmune disorders.
