Treating PTSD Without A Pill

PTSD cases are rising in the US, especially when you start to examine our troops. Currently, their options for treatment are limited to a pill. If you or someone you know is suffering from PTSD Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment may be a helpful option as a natural treatment.

PTSD Cases

In a 2017 study involving 5,826 United States veterans, 12.9% were diagnosed with PTSD. This is a strikingly high rate compared to the incidence of PTSD among the general population: Just 6.8% of the U.S. population will experience PTSD at any point in their lives. Across the entire US, only about 8 million U.S. adults have PTSD in a given year.

PTSD Symptoms

While symptoms vary from person to person as described in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) a few symptoms include:

  • Intrusive thoughts memories, flashbacks or dreams

  • Alterations in cognition and mood

  • Alterations in reactivity

  • Avoidance of the reminders of trauma

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment May Be Able To Help

There is growing evidence that concludes that traumatic events can change the brains function and structure that can exist years after the event happened. This insight leads us to believe that biological intervention can induce neuroplasticity and recovery of the damaged brain tissue. During a Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT) you inhale pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. This enhances the amount of oxygen found in the body's tissues.

According to clinicaltrials.gov "The effects of HBOT on patients suffering from chronic unremitting PTSD due to combat trauma were evaluated in a pilot study done in the investigator's institute. The recently done study included veterans with combat-associated PTSD according to the Ministry of Defense (MOD) criteria, who failed to improve using the current available treatments.

The results of the study demonstrated the beneficial effect of HBOT in this unfortunate severely injured unremitting PTSD population. Clinically significant improvement was demonstrated in a major fraction of study participants. In correlation with the clinical improvement, a significant improvement in brain activity was demonstrated in the functional MRI imaging."
